Summary:

Carbon sink may be achieved through either a reforestation or an afforestation project. Prelimanary analyses conducted by researchers at the Forest Research Institue Malaysia indicated that selected species planted under forest plantation programmes are capable of sequestering carbon , from a low of 3.5t/ha/yr for Dipterocarpus species to a high of 14.6 t/ha/yr for Eugenia urophylla. Malaysia has been attempting to expand her forest plantation area from 250,000 ha to 500,000 ha by viewed the timber industry, especially those who wish to be involved with planting forest trees, as an opportunity to play a more prominent role in the mission of reducing the country’s carbon emission. Nonetheless, before any conclusive about opportunities forest planters need to know what benefits await them should they get involved in such projects.
