Grows best in sandy loam soil but can grow in all soil conditions during the dry season. Can be grown in rice fields after the rice harvest. Best in sunny open conditions
Planting Suggestions
Prepare soil by mixing in chicken manure, compost, and/ or leaves. Plant 4-5 seeds per hill with a separation of 30 cms between hills. Once the seeds sprout leave 2-3 seedlings per hill or only 1 seedling per hill for larger ears.
Care
Start water when leaves start to wilt. Water regularly during flowing stage. When ears are maturing, stop watering and wait for harvest. (apply liquid biofertilizer periodically)
Pests and Diseases
Caterpillars (eat ears)
Harvesting
55- 70 days after seeding
Seed Saving
At about 70 days the ears will be fully matured. The husks will start to turn brown. When you observe the ears will start to lean down and the corn silk is dry, harvest, dehusk, and then dry 6-7 days. Remove kernels and separate out immature seeds. Store at room temperature or in a bottle.
